Vegan retinol or Bakuchiol is a vegetable active ingredient that comes from the leaves and seeds of a plant called Babchi (Psoralea corylifolia). The history of this powerful plant active has its origin in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine where it began to be used some decades ago for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Bakuchiol activates the same receptors as retinoids, although its chemical structure is different. It is a phytoretinol that, unlike of animal origin retinol, is highly tolerable in sensitive skin, does not cause side effects such as irritation, flaking or redness, and also, as it is not photosensitive, it can be used both day and night. Its mechanism of action activates the fibroblasts in the skin, stimulating the synthesis of collagen and elastin.
Vegan retinol is an effective alternative to animal origin retinol for those with sensitive skin who are looking for a natural cosmetic, are pregnant and/or want to include active ingredients with retinol-like action in their treatments.
